Depending on your ring’s setting, you can soak your diamond engagement or wedding rings in a mix of dishwashing liquid and water for up to 30 minutes. This method works best for prong and cathedral settings. For pave or basket settings, soaking may loosen the stones, so be cautious. Use warm water with mild soap and let the jewelry sit for a few minutes. Then, gently clean the metal (gold, platinum, or silver) using a soft cloth or cotton swab, and rinse. You can repeat this process if needed, but always be careful when soaking any jewelry.
For extra shine, you can use a glass cleaner. But since it has strong chemicals, don’t soak your jewelry in it for more than one minute. Also, avoid using it on rhodium-plated items. After using a glass cleaner, rinse thoroughly with the same mild soap solution. Dip, rinse with warm water, and dry completely.
You can use a toothpick to clean dirt stuck between the prongs and diamonds, but do it gently to avoid damaging the metal or moving a prong. If threads from cloth get stuck in the setting, use tweezers carefully to remove them. Even though diamonds are very hard and can’t be scratched easily, the metal they’re set in can get scratched more easily.
Ionic cleaners are safe for most diamond jewelry. But if your ring has other gemstones, make sure they can handle the cleaning method, as some stones don’t react well to the electrical current used in these devices.
When putting away your diamond jewelry, store each piece separately. Diamonds are very hard and can scratch other jewelry — and even other diamonds. Keep them apart to avoid damage.
